In this engaging and insightful collection of essays, Marina Keegan captures the essence of being young and ambitious as she writes with wit and candor about life before it’s over. Her voice is honest, intelligent, and constantly questioning: in a world that pressures young people to squeeze out the meaning from their limited years on earth, why would anyone want to waste their time? The Opposite of Loneliness gives readers just what they need to make sense of the world we live in today.

The beauty, the love, and the intensity of Marina Keegan’s life—and death—come together in this collection of essays, stories, and poems. When Marina died in a car accident two days after graduating from Yale University, she left behind an extraordinary body of work. In The Opposite of Loneliness, her family has gathered pieces that offer a moving account of one woman’s life and a window into her generation. From her first college experiences at NYU to her graduation from Yale to the nights out dancing at indie rock clubs or the beach bonfire parties with friends; from family drama to politics, the media, and rape culture; from college life to finding love with an older man—Marina writes passionately, clearly and with enormous empathy about everything that matters most.

This is the first book to depict Marina Keegan’s extraordinary life and work. This posthumous collection of her essays, stories, poems, and plays presents Keegan’s writing at its most raw and honest, as well as in a range of genres—from memoirs to magazine pieces to one-act plays. From her passionate defense of the Occupy movement to her lyrical essay about sexual assault on college campuses, from her favorite dog-eared page in Moby-Dick to a piercing poem about the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, The Opposite of Loneliness reflects Keegan’s evolving worldview; it is haunted by the author’s infectious sense humor and compassion for humankind and reminds us how urgent it is for young artists today—and for all of us—to be able to speak our voice unfettered.

About The Opposite of Loneliness Book

An affecting and hope-filled posthumous collection of essays and stories from the talented young Yale graduate whose title essay captured the world’s attention in 2012 and turned her into an icon for her generation.

Marina Keegan’s star was rising when she graduated magna cum laude from Yale in May 2012. She had a play to be produced at the New York International Fringe Festival and a job waiting for her at the New Yorker. Tragically, five days after graduation, Marina died in a car crash.

As her family, friends, and classmates, deep in grief, joined to create a memorial service for Marina, her unforgettable last essay for the Yale Daily News, “The Opposite of Loneliness,” went viral, receiving more than 1.4 million hits. She had struck a chord.

Even though she was just twenty-two when she died, Marina left behind a rich, expansive trove of prose that, like her title essay, captures her generation’s hope, uncertainty, and possibility. The Opposite of Loneliness is an assemblage of Marina’s essays and stories that, like The Last Lecture, articulates the universal struggle that all of us face as we figure out what we aspire to be and how we can harness our talents to make an impact on the world.
