The Last Kingdom series centers on the creation of England in the ninth and tenth centuries, the years in which King Alfred the Great led the defense of his kingdom against a Danish invasion. The series dramatizes both the exploits of rulers like Alfred, who was forced to flee to exile in his own kingdom after fighting for many years against Danish invaders, and also those who fought for power within Wessex and Mercia as rival dynasties fought for political dominance.

As the English kingdoms fall to the invading Danes, Uhtred, a young warrior of Northumbria, observes as his home is destroyed and his family is brutally killed. Only after he manages to escape does he realize that he has been taken in by Danish King Alfred of Wessex, the only king in all of England who can save Uhtred and stand against their common enemy: the Danes. As Uhtred grows from boyhood to a warrior age, The Last Kingdom takes readers through time and into battle as it narrates England’s struggle in this period of history.

In this epic of war, betrayal, and adventure in the time of Danish Vikings, a 13-year-old boy named Uhtred is captured by them and raised as one of their own. Though his loyalties become divided between the Danes who raised him and the Saxons who are destined to be England’s progenitors, Uhtred will have to make a choice between Britain’s two great cultures or battle both sides until he can claim the birthright that is rightfully his–whatever that might mean.

About The Last Kingdom Book

This is the story of the making of England in the 9th and 10th centuries, the years in which King Alfred the Great, his son, and grandson defeated the Danish Vikings who had invaded and occupied three of England’s four kingdoms.

The story is seen through the eyes of Uhtred, a dispossessed nobleman, who is captured as a child by the Danes and then raised by them so that, by the time the Northmen begin their assault on Wessex (Alfred’s kingdom and the last territory in English hands) Uhtred almost thinks of himself as a Dane. He certainly has no love for Alfred, whom he considers a pious weakling and no match for Viking savagery, yet when Alfred unexpectedly defeats the Danes and the Danes themselves turn on Uhtred, he is finally forced to choose sides. By now he is a young man, in love, trained to fight, and ready to take his place in the dreaded shield wall. Above all, though, he wishes to recover his father’s land, the enchanting fort of Bebbanburg by the wild northern sea.

This thrilling adventure—based on existing records of Bernard Cornwell’s ancestors—depicts a time when law and order were ripped violently apart by a pagan assault on Christian England, an assault that came very close to destroying England.
