In No Longer Human, Osamu Dazai tells the story of an ordinary office worker who married a pregnant woman and brought up three children. He argues that it is impossible to recreate oneself solely according to one’s standards. Instead, one has to accept the conditions in which society places us without putting our happiness ahead of its conditions.

The protagonist, who longs to understand the world around him, but is physically a failure, tells his life as an old man in No Longer Human. Influenced by a troubled past, he believes that his only way of being human is to be solitary. But when he meets other people and learns about them from a distance, he finds that this is not true – everyone has their own story.

Osamu Dazai’s masterpiece, No Longer Human (written in Japanese as “Homo Sashimi,” which is a romanization of the character’s name), was the first novel in his “apartment” cycle. In this story old man O., who lives alone and is a broke writer, is left by his wife and sent to live in a nursing home. While there he meets his young niece who is also living at the home. The two form an unlikely bond that forces both O. and Nai to face themselves as human beings long stripped of their humanity by their pasts.

A story of shame and alienation, No Longer Human is an intensely moving novel about one man’s inner crisis. Japan’s Nobel laureate Osamu Dazai (1909-1948) has long been considered a master of the grotesque and the macabre, his work often starkly physical in its depiction of isolated, pathetic figures. But Dazai was also a literary giant, with deep powers of observation and distillation. In this extraordinary novel, he tells us what it means to be a human being–a process that dismays us at first but ultimately creates order within chaos.

About No Longer Human Book

Mine has been a life of much shame. I can’t even guess myself what it must be to live the life of a human being.

Portraying himself as a failure, the protagonist of No Longer Human narrates a seemingly normal life even while he feels incapable of understanding human beings. Oba Yozo’s attempts to reconcile himself to the world around him begin in early childhood, continue through high school, where he becomes a “clown” to mask his alienation, and eventually lead to a failed suicide attempt as an adult. Without sentimentality, he records the casual cruelties of life and its fleeting moments of human connection and tenderness.

Semi-autobiographical, No Longer Human is the final completed work of Osamu Dazai. Still one of the ten bestselling books in Japan, No Longer Human is a powerful exploration of an individual’s alienation from society.
