This is the story of Charlie and Nick and how they got together. It sounds straightforward, and in many ways, it is – but that only allows Alice Oseman to polish each beat of the story to perfection.
Nick’s nervousness and anxiety – and the fact that he’s living in the aftermath of being bullied – is portrayed well, and he and Charlie’s genuine good-natured friendship (and later, more than that) shines out. With the story’s simplicity, it might have been easy to end up with characters who felt like cardboard cut-outs, but all of the people in this story feel like they could jump off the page. This is largely due to Oseman’s ability to hint at a depth of a character with a few sparse details that allow you to build a picture quickly.
I like Alice Oseman’s art style in this – it’s so simple and works so well to tell the story. I laughed loud at points, and I think I was grinning through about 80% of it. I can’t wait to get hold of the next volume – and this has also prompted me to get hold of Solitaire, which I haven’t read yet, so I look forward to that!
